It was firstly built in the 18th century by devouted sailors from Zakynthos. However, the present church was built in 1828. This church is mostly famous for the miraculous icon of the Virgin.According to tradition, three cephalonian sailors from Lixouri were captured in Algeria, tightly chained in a dark cell. |
On the day before the Virgin's feast day, they were praying to Her to help them return to their island.Praying they fell asleep. When they woke up they found themselves under a small bridge near the monastery.Since then, they decided to become monks.So the monastery was rebuilt. |
