THE CAPITAL |
Argostoli is the capital of the prefecture of Cephalonia. A flat
stone bridge connects the town with the main roads to Sami, Lixouri and fiskardo on the
other side of the lagoon. In the middle of
the bridge a small pyramid, the 'Colona', has been erected and dedicated to its
architect Charles de Bosset. A pretty promenade along the sea leads you to the
port buildings. Turning left, you arrive at the Platia, the main square with
its many cafes and restaurants. Parallel to the street along the port runs the pedestrian
street (Lithostroto). Here you can find many
shops, the church of Saint Spyridon and the
clock tower of Campana Square. Other
important sights are the Archaeological Museum,
the Corgialenian Library with a Folklore Museum in the basement and the theatre
"Kefalos". Near Argostoli you should visit the unique geological phenomenon of the Katavothres and
the old seamill closeby. Here seawater disappears through sink holes into the ground and
reappears at the west side of the island a couple of weeks later. Lassi is the tourist and
entertainment centre south of Argostoli, where you find many tavernas, bars and most of
the accommodation. The two popular sandy beaches of Makris and Platis gialos are located here. |
